If You Say You Are On Oxygen 24/7, Does That Really Mean All Night And Day?
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

I don’t understand when people say they are on oxygen 24/7, then talk about mowing the yard or working in the garden. I have to sleep with mine on, and wear all day. I have a portable one that I have to use just anytime I leave the house. I check my oximeter often and can leave it off taking a shower. It’s even hard to cook with the tubing!!

I was on oxygen 24/7 when I first went on it. I had pneumonia and I do believe I needed it like that. I used to hang it over the shower rod and I did use it a couple times. I have used it while cooking and still do if I need it. I have it hooked up to my CPAP machine at night with an adapter. I have used the long hoses to do work in my flower beds, and to work out in my garden. And probably will again this year. I use the portable tanks in my backpack to shovel snow, mow my grass and using my weed eater to edge my yard. Having the oxygen for exertion is the very best for my organs not to be oxygen deprived. Quality of life is everything. Hallelujah I Praise God for this yet another wonderful tool.

The reason you're on O2 is because you don't have enough O2 in your blood to avoid damage to heart, brain and other organs. When you're prescribed O2, your doc is supposed to test your O2 levels at rest, with exertion and with sleep. If your O2 sats are at or below 88 during all of those activities, you're probably going to be prescribed O2 24/7. That said, there are no reasons why you can't continue live your life pretty much as you have been.

With a portable system, whether it's tanks or a POC in a backpack, you can mow the lawn, go for a walk, work in the garden, play with your grandchildren, go to the grocery store or ride a zipline. One of my favorite pictures of a good friend is of her riding a zipline using her portable LOX Smartdose unit. In short, you can do just about anything with O2 that you did before you were prescribed O2. No reason not to, and every reason to enjoy your life. Merry Mary has the right idea!

I do not use Oxygen but several of my neighbors do and they are on it all day and night as they keep up with there daily work habits. Because of today's portable oxygen machines they are smaller and easier to handle and can go just about anywhere without the extra long tubing.
