CT Scan Shows "background Emphysematous Change" After 6 Years Of Good CT Scans
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

Hello: I've been getting CT scans for about 6 years to rule out hereditary lung cancer (paternal side of family). All scans have come back no issues annually. This week however, my ct scan results showed this "background emphysematous change"; then my doctor added the note "CT Scan shows emphysema". I'm a bit freaked out right now as my knowledge of this illness is that it's a death sentence. I do have a lot of wheezing and have had this for about the last year. However, I can walk a couple of… read more

These may very well be emphysematous changes that are associated with age, with left-overs from previous lung issues like pneumonia and not necessarily indicative of emphysema. I think you probably have a PCP reading the scan, and not a pulmonologist. The definitive test for emphysema and chronic bronchitis is a spirometry or Pulmonary Function Test and you need one or the other. Given what you say you can do, my guess is that what they're seeing is pretty normal and not indicative of lung disease, or if it is, it's lung disease at the very beginning of it. So calm down. Find a pulmonologist and get tested. Then if there's something to worry about, you'll know what it is and have a treatment plan. I've lived with emphysema for well over 35 years now, so it's quite possible to live a very full and active life even with a third the lung function of someone without lung disease. I'm quite likely to die of something quite unrelated to COPD, I'm 77 and fully expect to live a for a good deal longer!

Hello Katgmcginn. Sounds to me that you are at the early stages. If I were you, I would educate myself and take appropriate steps. NO smoking , exercising , talking about it , good food etc. Two people I was talking with also had COPD. They thought them being tired, out of breathe , winded easily was a getting old thing. It wasn't. A lot of good informed people on this site. Remember. We are born and we all die ! It's what we do in between that counts !! You got this.

Hello again! Well, finally I've had my consult (if you want to call it that) with my pulmonary doctor (I have Kaiser btw). The pulmonary doctor confirmed that I have mild emphysema. She said I could remain in this stage for many years as long as I do not smoke (I don't intend to smoke again ever) and take care of myself such as exercising etc. I was pretty dumbfounded at how casual she was about it. Appreciate everyone's support on this forum!

Katgmcginn. I agree with Bulletbob. Exercise and healthy diet very beneficial. I was diagnosed over 11 yrs ago and put on meds. I think I'm still stage 2 . I work, I travel, I go slower and rest more but I'm 70. I should be going slower and resting more anyways !! Lol. Good luck

I felt the same after my diagnosis 4 yrs ago felt very scared, yes it is a progressive disease, but it's not a death sentence. If you possibly can do the Pulmonary rehabilitation programme it really helps, helps you to manage the condition understand it a bit. Exercise is very important as is keeping well hydrated and posative, breathing exercises. I know not everywhere offers Pulmonary rehab, ask your Dr or respiratory Nurse if you have one. There's alot on line that helps. The British Lung foundation have lots of advice, videos. I hope this helps you. Take care. Breathe Easy xxx Tessa
