Severe Pneumonia (One Lobe Missing On Right Side So Function Loss There) W/COPD - Struggling With Fatigue And Breathing To Recover
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone recovered from severe pneumonia (I had necrotizing pneumonia and in hospital 7 days on 2 IV antibiotics) which was undiagnosed for a month or longer so I was battling longer than the 7 days (approx. 6 weeks prior to full-blown pneumonia) and am experiencing horrible fatigue and tiredness and on and off breathing (SOB just doing tasks around house or stairs or even activity within house and talking I have shortness of breath. Don’t think I ever had pneumonia but am firmly convinced I had Covid BEFORE the virus broke here. Know others who say the same but docs say, “no it wasn’t here until they say so!” (BULL!) since then I have become extremely tired and can’t walk into the next room without becoming hard to breathe. Like you, I need answers and help but pulmonary doc does not seem to be hearing me. Keep me posted if you get some new info… PLEASE.

You had a very nasty pneumonia, and it lasted a long time, especially before being diagnosed and the treated. Recovery will take a long time. However, there are things you can do to help yourself. Talk with your doc about your recovery, and how tired and fatigued you are. One thing you might want to talk about is daily rest, if not napping. Another is to talk about a daily exercise program where you start with doing exercises to increase your strength; maybe 10-15 minutes of gentle exercise in a chair. You can google chair exercises and find lots that will help. Don't do too many at once, just some. When you feel stronger, you might try walking for 10 or 15 minutes, maybe a little more, maybe a little less.

The point is, it will take a long time to get back to where you were before you got sick, but you can do things to help speed the process up a little by exercising a little bit every day. If you keep track of what you do, you will begin to see progress unless you overdo it. For the first month, do enough every time that you feel a little tired.....10 or 15 minutes of gentle exercise. As you get stronger, increase the intensity or the time. Over several months, you'll see the difference.

I never had as severe a pneumonia as you did, but it's taken me three to four months to recover from being sick, and that was exercising pretty hard. It does take time and it can be pretty frustrating, but you can recover and you will recover faster if you work at it. Otherwise, you can look at anywhere from 12 to 18 months, I suspect.

Hi Susan
I had pneumonia 3 years ago. Not like yours but bad. 2 days in hospital antibiotics and rest
Trying to stay off oxygen when I exercise by doing jobs around the house my rate is 93. Not too bad wish it was better but I resigned myself to appreciate what I have and push forward

Hope this helps
Breathing easy

I think you just need time to recoup after pneumonia. Fatigue goes with COPD.
So sorry you are having problems.
