A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm trying to get a transplant, I've been on diazepam for 20 yrs & the transplant at BJC wants me to quit my Dr said to ween off so I am doing that & I got tested again & it came back positive so I think they might take me off list is thated alright for them to do? I am end stage so it's a life sentence if I don't get accepted

In order to qualify for a transplant, you need to pass all the tests and meet all the requirements for your transplant center (not all centers have the same requirements). If you don't, then yes, they certainly have the right to take you off the list or not put you on in the first place. That said, I would suggest that you and your doc talk with the transplant team to find out exactly what they expect and what sort of a time frame is appropriate to achieve the results expected. I would also ask how long does the drug stay in your system before you could test negative? Lots of times that's a cumulative thing, and you've been taking the med for 20 years. You have an opportunity to take control of your own situation here. You could also ask if there's an alternative med for anxiety that you could take. I think if you talk with them and ask questions, you'll do a lot better.

Diazapam has a 1/2 life of 48 hours before it's completely out of your system. It's one of those nasty benzodiazepines with life threatening side effects if you decrease your dosage too fast. Please be very careful. It's taken me over three years to cut my benzodiazepine (clonazapam) dosage in half (I've been taking it for 20 years too). It's a rocky road getting off of these medications when they're used on a daily basis. They shouldn't be used this way because they're extremely addictive. Take good care of yourself and do your best at being an advocate for yourself for the sake of your mental wellness. I'll be praying for you. Easy breathing friend. Ever

You need to follow your doctors orders and get the transplant. If you aren’t weening off fast enough, ask them to direct you to a schedule to achieve your goal. Best wishes!

It's not harmful in the short-term, but apparently there are long term consequences if you want a transplant. There are also a lot of other things that can help with anxiety. There are many meds you can take that will help with anxiety, and I'm sure some of them don't have the long-term consequences that diazepam apparently has. There's my preferred way, and that's to learn techniques and tricks that help you manage and control your own anxiety so you don't have to take meds for it. There are choices.
