Does The Heat Always Make Brating Harder With Copd?
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

When I am at work and the day gets hot I seem to have a harder time breathing, will being in the heat make my copd worse?

You COPD won't get worse, but your breathing may. The heat won't affect things like your FEV1 so the COPD doesn't get worse but your symptoms may get worse. Difficulty breathing is one of the symptoms of COPD and it often is harder for us to breathe when it's very hot and humid. When you're in "weather you can wear", as my meteorologist likes to say, breathing can be difficult for those of us with COPD. It can mean that we may need more O2 because our O2 sats go down as it's harder to breathe. Some folks have a much harder time in the cold when it's cold and wet. It depends on you. But you aren't the only one, believe me! Many of us get really uncomfortable in the high heat and humidity and find it very hard to breathe......along with everyone else you know, whether or not they have lung disease!

Not all COPD is the same. In my case, I’m best in the high heat, but we have a dry heat with zip for humidity, so I’m not battling moistness.

I’m at my worst in cold and damp of Winter, @A MyCOPDTeam Member.

Generally, I recommend running a wellness diary so that can determine any triggers, and know when you’re feeling your best or are more likely to have complications.

It certainly makes mine much worse, but conversely, cold without humidity makes it worse, too! Strange! If I’m out in the very cold, I pull my scarf up and breath through it. My breath gives me more moisture.

The heat, humidity, and the air quality all affect my COPD. I have been watching all three since early spring when I started to wonder. I find heat over 88 and humidity above 55 air quality above 50 are when I have a hard time outside.
Before this year I loved the heat. I worked outside year round as a bricklayer. I would be the last one to want to go home even when we knocked off due to the excessive heat.
