Zephyr Valves
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am being assessed to see if I am eligible for zephyr valves. Does anyone have experience with them? It sounds like something that would be wonderful if I met the criteria.

I've not had them, but the results seem to depend to a great extent on where you have the procedure done and the expertise of the individuals doing the evaluations. The more rigorous the evaluation and the closer the center keeps to the parameters the better. The most prevalent side effects are collapsed lungs and pneumonia, though most people recover from those reasonably well. As for the results, once the procedure is complete and the patient is released from the hospital, some people see remarkable improvement, while others see moderate improvement and some see none, and even have the valves removed. For a good idea of what you're in for, talk with your center about the results they've had and ask to see the numbers. Believe me, they keep them! You can also ask to talk with someone who's had the procedure. Ask lots of questions and ask to see the raw data. Keep asking questions until you get answers that make sense. If it works, they can be a game-changer.
