Oxygen Level Settings

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Wondering what determines what setting level that you would use? I have always been on 2, set it on 3 if I move around. Sometimes I wonder if I need to go higher. Just sitting I am fine it's the moving around that gets me.

I’ve gotten different answers from the doctor, the RT and the oxygen technician😁! My doctor said on 3 all the time, the tech said on 3 15 hours a day and the RT said move it to 2 or take it off when I’m sitting around! I do a combo of all 3 depending how I feel

You may also take into account the Environment, A/C Non A/C. My o2 levels are good in the Airconditioned setting of any dr's office. once I get outside, Everything Changes. You need to Monitor your Stats in the Real world Conditions. 2 Liters seems to be what the Standard is from most Dr's. I have 24% lung function and NO A/C at home. I sleep with .75 liter while sleeping. I walk my dog 1+ miles every Morning on 1 Liter. I use my Concentrator on 2 when I exercise, As long as your o2 doesn't fall below 90% you are good. We are all different and Require Different Settings.

If your pulmonary doc knows what they're doing or the person who does the walk test to determine what levels of 02 you should be using for varying activities knows, they'll actually have you do things at varying activity levels to figure that out. So under that method, you'd know what level you need to maintain to wander around the mall, versus walking determinedly from one store to the next, versus hauling groceries up two flights of stairs, to scrubbing the floors, etc. I have a deal with my pulmonologist: I keep my saturation levels between 92 and 97 using my oximeter and he's happy. Actually, that's the best, most accurate and easiest way to do it. However, you may have to convince your doc that you're capable of doing that. The argument that seems to work best is this: docs expect people to be able to measure their blood sugar and then figure out how much insulin to use based on what they think they're going to eat: this is a whole lot easier and a lot less dangerous!

So talk with your doc about your concerns. Take your oximeter and show them why you're concerned. If they haven't tested you on stairs, for instance, and you use stairs in your house, show them. Show them so they understand that first you do understand what you're doing and why you're concerned. They should be able to help you decide what's best in different circumstances. After all, you're the one who's got to use the 02 and you might as well show them you understand how to figure it out! If you don't have an oximeter, get one and use it.

I wonder whether I should use my 02 when I have some sob but could restore my breath with deep breathing. Can you undermine your progress by over using o2? Should you only use when nothing else will work or is it ok to use it just when it’s easier?
