I can walk w/o oxygen using a rollator (roller walker with seat) and just use O2 at nite in bed. I’ve learned to walk slowly, don’t forget to breathe when walking, and breathe thru my nose and exhale with pursed lips. I take buthspar for anxiety, which also helps ward off anxiety attacks. Looking forward to getting my Luisa NIV soon for more help!

@A MyCOPDTeam Member every one is different. when I go out I always have both with me. I will use the reg nasal cannula while driving short walks etc. I can manage on 3 ltr cont. on a short walk into the stores. The trick is to not rush! I walk at a slow steady pace and stop often. Just remember when you break to take good intake breathes and be sure to pursed lip to exhale as deep as possible. Remember, COPD emphysema is retaining to much CO2 so the exhale is really important. I use the NIV when I know I will have to walk long distances and possibly some incline or faster pace. For instance when I do my min walk test. I tend to start out a little fast with it set in the middle setting I get about 2.5 to 3.5 lpm of o2 and as my breathing picks up the NIV will adjust and increase the o2 flow automatically. I got as high as 5.4 lpm while doing one test. I hope this helps. I see you say you are at 25 to 30 on FEV1 I remember being at that a coupe years ago. Sense I started my application process to get listed I had lots of things to overcome. I quit drinking cold turkey, I did 40 sessions of pulm. rehab therapy. and have lost 30 lbs of excess weight. Before I could hardly bend to do my toes and now it is much easier without all that excess weight. So with all the test done and passed and I mean a lot of test. I got listed on Dec 14th of 2022. I visit the TX clinic monthly and do a PFT every visit. My last visit on the 26th my FEV1 is now at 18%. Now to get a higher score on the revised scoring system I am currently a low 20's. Probably be better to get to a 25 or so for a better chance for a lung. Low pressure front just hit here today and I'm tight in the chest so I sneak in a few extra puffs of HFA Ventolin. Big help.
Keep moving forward and breathe easy!
Mike

No. I only use it when I know I'm going to be doing extensive walking. Even though I'm at 18% on my FEV1 (deep into stage IV ) I prefer just the nasal cannula at 3 ltr continuous. Even if I go to the store for a couple items. I will use my small o2 bottle and will increase flow of I feel like I'm needing it. I have been able to do pursed lip breathing very well and it is so helpful.

You should look at the Hill-Rom Life 2000 NIV! I have it and love it! I use it for my long days at the hospital for test like the 6 min walk and when I do my walks at home. Hooked up to a pull along E O2 bottle.
