Does Anyone Have Experience With Haloperidol?
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

My dad was on steroids( high dose) and was wondering is anyone has used Haloperidol's use to treat steroid-induced psychiatric symptoms? Any thoughts haven’t started them yet got prescription from his doctor today. Just don’t want to make it worse. Thank you guys for all the help

You are right; whoever prescribed a high dose of prednisone should have warned you of the possible side-effects. However, often those high doses are given in situations where you are in crisis and the provider has no choice but to try them to save your life. Years ago, as a mental health professional, I was called to the hospital to assess a patient who had been given massive doses of steroids to break a life-threatening asthma attack. After talking with the treating doc, who clearly said that her psychosis was the result of high doses of steroids which had broken the attack, and she'd be fine once they were out of her system, I approved her for the mental health bed in the hospital. When I followed up, she was fine and very grateful for having been treated appropriately. These meds are not given willy-nilly; not by competent docs.

Haloperidol is a major antipsychotic drug that is usually used with people who are diagnosed with schizophrenia. Before using it, I would consult with a psychiatrist regarding its potential effect on steroid induced psychosis.

@A MyCOPDTeam Member in this situation did you prescribe haloperidol? He isn’t aggressive or anything like that he just isn’t himself.. after 60 mg of steroids last week. I’m not sure if it would be better to wait it out, his doctor just perscibes stuff without seeing him unfortunately and doesn’t go over the side effect with me. I already feel like many problems that have came about came from not paying attention. Thank you

Yes he has been on and off of them for 3 months even with small flare ups. Know one told us anything like this they just told us to take them. I still don’t have a clear path on to what to do
