A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

High blood pressure. I was wondering if high blood pressure is common with lung diseases. Thank you 🦋Victoria

@A MyCOPDTeam Member….yeah, my family has been involved with cars in one way or another, for as long as I can remember! That’s also how
I explain to them how the body functions and how parts of body depend on all parts working well, like a car! Our lung function, or lack there of, effects other major parts- like our hearts. 😁
I’m also on 2 anti-anxiety meds.
If you’re stressed -heart rate goes up and breathing becomes more difficult.😬 I’m also researching natural herbs and how they help the body. After all, our care of our bodies is ultimately up to US!🙂
Wishing All a wonderful Wednesday!
Breathe easy out there!💕
Keep laughing! It’s good for your lungs! 😁

The heart and the lungs are connected; that's why it's called the cardiopulmonary system. Heart issues and lung issues often go hand in hand, and when we struggle to breathe, that makes the heart work harder, so it's not unusual for people with COPD to have heart issues as well. That certainly includes high blood pressure. Various studies have concluded that high blood pressure is independently associated with COPD: in other words, COPD doesn't cause high blood pressure but is often associated with it. Age doesn't cause high blood pressure, but is often associated with it. People with COPD are often older and often do have high blood pressure. So yes, high blood pressure is common among people with COPD, but there is no causal relationship, according to the studies.

Ha @A MyCOPDTeam Member! Love the car example as you can tell. Spot on.

But to add to the HBP mystery for Victoria, my best correlation can be made to medications as well. And proper Hydration by far. Thinned blood moves moves better through the veins I've come to know.

Every ER visit involved an almost instant IV connection. No explanation given. Our tissues and cells are drier than most due to use to our labored and deeper breathing due to our condition.

My most recent discovery involves the Statin meds for high Cholesterol. After the first 90 days, the Doc noted not only lower LDL levels but a drop in BP too. That was to be expected but still surprising since HBP was not on the radar to begin with. I have learned to ask related questions with each different Doc to learn where the overlap in our conditions really are.

I'm sorry I don't have an answer or knowledge of the question. But @A MyCOPDTeam Member, if you don't mind, would you please tell me what meds you are on for the anti-anxiety? That's one of my biggest problems. Hope all are having a good day - copd sucks! As always... Narrowdog

Hi Victoria. I was diagnosed with COPD and high blood pressure at the same time. It was when I was in the hospital with COVID. Prior to them I often had low blood pressure. I believe I had COPD before then in a mild form, just not yet diagnosed. Many years ago I was diagnosed with a heart arrhythmia. It was a weird feeling
I would get like a random flutter in my chest, no pain. But it eventually went away. I don’t know what may have caused it or how it was healed. Now when
I have extreme SOB it hurts like heck and it radiates from my heart. Like a painful shock going through my body. I don’t know how they are related. When I have my annual check up with my cardiologist I plan to discuss it.
And my Pulmonologist wants me to do a stress test which might bring it on??
This illness is definitely complicated!
I often use the analogy of our bodies being much like a car. Sometimes hard to determine the cause of certain malfunctions
I thing mine is in the “electrical system”. Just not sure where!🤷🏻‍♀️
But… I’m on 2 blood pressure meds. 🫤
Hope you have a breathe easy Wednesday! 😁
