When On O2, Do You Place The Nose Inserts That Deliver The O2 Up Or Down?
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

I've been on O2 for 10 years and have always had the nose inserts facing up into my nose. A technician was here to check my O2 machine and told me that was wrong. The inserts should face down. I could feel the coolness of the O2 with them down but seem to get the same O2 readings whichever way I place them. I'm at the scary stage of copd and will appreciate input.

I think it's important for you to be comfortable with the way your cannula faces. Up or down doesn't matter in the delivery of 02, so do what you're confortable with.

i don't think it matters as long as you are comfortable and are getting the same results

Thanks to all! I was told I have a deviated septum but not long ago I dozed off while at my computer and did bang my nose as I slouched over and hit the card table next to me. Up does feel better and my O2 readings don't seem to differ. Curse copd and hope all have an ez breathing day! Maybe I'll do half the day up and half down 😏

We may have a terminology problem here.

The proper placement of the prongs on the cannula are to insert them INTO (UP) the nose with the curved shape resting DOWN on the bone (curved part) inside the nasal passage.

Although I have only been to ONE (same) Hospital - (BUT multiple times) - Every nurse and Doctor placed them the same way and never offered another option. Besides the gentle flow of air has a way of calming the feeling of SOB. I'm still waiting on someone to explain that one to me. Be well
