I think you'll find that you need to try medications before you decide that you really want to take them long term. What works well for some patients doesn't always work well for others, and you often need to experiment with individual meds within the three classes of meds for COPD before you decide which works best for you. This is NOT a one-size fits all condition, and the meds definitley work differently in different people. Try before you decide!
