Surgery And Copd
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

I've had to cancel one surgery because the Doctor is concerned that I may end up on a ventilator and may not be able to get off of it and now I need another but do to this disease I've had to opt for an amputation do to the risks involved,

For most surgeries using standard anesthesia, it's standard practice to intubate the individual. I've had that done for several surgeries and haven't had any trouble coming off the vent. Sometimes, depending on the individual, docs are very reluctant to suggest regular anesthesia because of difficulty that may be encountered getting off the vent. You probably want to discuss this with your pulmonologist, your surgeon and with the anesthesiologist. You should also ask what alternative to regular anesthesia there might be for you for this particular surgery.

Going through that now also. My Pulmonologist said I am unable to be put to sleep. I have no air. I will not come off a ventilator. My friend mentioned a spinal so I’ll talk with my Dr about that next time i go.

It has to do with anesthesia because of my lung condition if they have to put me on a ventilator they are concerned I may not get off of it ,I've already had one procedure cancelled over that and this one a different approach had to be taken and right now I'm not even sure I'll get through it. I know to some this won't make sense but I'm in a difficult place with this.

Thanks Jean we've been in discussions and I can opt out totally which I don't want to do so it needs to be done and consensus is the risk of intubation is to high and I've decided that's not what I'm willing to do.

DuaneDennis , I'm so sorry to hear this. Why does he feel like you would be on a ventilator may I ask?
