i do upper body work out that i learned in rehab with 3 pound weights. i started out with 15 reps per exercise and gradually worked my way up to 50 reps. it takes me about 30 minuets. they are sitting down exercises so i sit at the computer and watch an episode of mash 4077 while i do them.after i rest from that i do 3/4 miles on the treadmill at what ever speed you are comfortable with and gradually work up to a quicker speed. depending on your abilities at this time if you can only do say 1/4 mile that's fine. build up to farther slowly. i have gradually increased my speed from 1.3 to 1.7 on a good day. there will me days that you need to slow down but that's ok your not running a race. what you are mostly trying to achieve is endurance.deep breathing while working out is a must and there will be days when you cant do as much as the day before. set small goals for your self.figure it like this if you add a minuet a week on the tread mill at the end of a year you will have added 52 minuets. if you would like more detail on the upper body exercises that straighten you chest muscles that with copd we mostly breath with let me know.

@billgotbed pretty much that water exercise is the only exercise allowed as I also have an ascending aortic aneurism. Ahhh if we only knew what smoking was all about 50 years ago but on with life the best way we can and start anew

@A MyCOPDTeam Member what i was taught at respiratory rehab was this. starting out with very little weights i called them the barby weights(they were like 1 lb and pink) lol two cans of vegetables will do to start. sitting on a kitchen chair both arms straight down raise them with out bending the elbows straight out in front of you to shoulder height, the next on is arms straight down at your sides and shrug your shoulders as high as you can. next one arms straight down at your side raise your arms out side ways to shoulder height like a kid playing airplane. nest arms straight down at your sides raise the weights by bending at the elbows only. and the last one arms straight down at your sides with out bending your elbows raise your arms straight back behind you. this is what i was taught i am in no way a respiratory therapist and would suggest you check with your DR before starting any exercise program. if you try any of these and feel unusual discomfort stop until you talk to your DR. not knowing your physical condition it might be wise to just practice these a bit with no weight at all. if any of this is confusing let me know any questions you my have
