If I start coughing or get congested, I use my nebulizer three times a day in till the coughing stops. When I am in the hospital, they give me breathing treatments every four hours while I'm there . Seems to work for me. I also have allergies to a lot of things.

I use symbicort , spireva and daliresp, use nebulizer when needed, up to 4 x a day.. Other are for cholestrol, nothing for heart, yet! lol tks for joining in with our team, many other members may have answers for you, I had to change doc because of insurance issues after 5 yrs, but he is pretty good, ask a lot of questions and make sure you understand what he is telling you and get your records sent to him.
I hope you find the help you need and answers to some of your questions. Hugs for a better day, pulmonary doc is one you need to have.

Could it be the stinky fertilizer. A lot of odd odors get me coughing.

When I cough a bit I do not worry. When I cough with mucus coming up I know something has or is stirring up my lungs - dust, pollen, oncoming infection and the like. Coughing within reason seems a good thing as it gets the gunk out of your lungs, but this is not the coughing which makes your whole chest ache. Often two inhalations with my Salbutamol inhaler will do it. Sometimes it takes two or three rounds of inhalations over 1-3 days. Depending on the color of the mucus, I may figure out that I am getting an infection for which antibiotics is the solution. Hope this helps.
