I Am Thinking About Applyimg For Disability. What Advice Do You Have On That?
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

how long does it normally take to be approved? What about coverage for medicines, doctors and hospital stays (ins.). I have severe copd so I DON'T THINK there will be a problem with me being approved. did you apply while you still had some quality of life left or did you wait until absolutely necessary to apply? Thanks for any info concerning this.

I applied when my doctor told me to and was accepted on first time. I had no issues as everything was documented by my doctor and the test done. Did not need attorney.

I applied and was surprised within a month was approved. I also heard it was hard to get approved. Told the first attempt you are turned down but keep trying. I had no attorney and I applied on line. I got a letter that they had set me up to do a breathing test. Only test I'm glad I didn't pass. LOL. Meaning,I hardly could do it.

I was declared by the state totally disabled when I was 50 yrs old. It wasn't for COPD. Mine was for workers compensation. I had two different spinal fusions and other numerous surgeries. I was turned down twice and approved on the third appeal. I highly recommend you get a lawyer because the SSI is very picky and if you don't have proof of everything, they turn you down. A lawyer knows how to cut through the red tape
They are the worst agency I ever had to deal with. It's a shame we have to fight for money that we put in. The government was never suppose to touch Social Security money and now they are telling us they are running out of money. Very sad.

I actually called social security and asked them what I needed to do to apply and receive disability. I followed all their instructions and it took 6 months, apparently you need to be disabled for 6 months. For insurance I went through the market place... Once you're disabled for 2 years you are automatically put on Medicare. I just found that out last year. I have applied for financial aid for some of the medications I can't afford and now receive my Advair and Spiriva for free, your pulmonary doctor should be able to help you out with the applications.
