There are generally four stages of COPD. The GOLD standard:

Mild: FEV1 less than 70
Moderate: FEV1 50 or more
Severe FEV1 30 or more
Very Severe: FEV1 less than 30

The stages are really designed for docs, and generally also take into account how many exacerbations you've had over the last year and the severity of them. Docs, like primary care docs who don't know a lot about COPD, use this standard to help them determine a reasonable treatment plan. This is determined by a pulmonologist; the radiologist has nothing to do with it.

People shouldn't get too caught up in the stages of the disease. Numbers are just numbers and don't define you. What really defines you is how you feel and what you can do.
