I'm My Wife's Caregiver. Has Anyone Had Issues With Loss Of Cognitive Ability? Names, Places, Events?
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

She landed in the hospital a year ago when I returned from a road trip only to find her in bed for the last four days, no food drinks or treatments. She didn't know her name or mine or where she was. The doctors said high co2 and ammonia in her blood. took 6 days on a ventilator to get her back. She just started the same behavior today!!! Background: on 4 lpm for the last 12 years nearly home bound, less than 35% FVI. looking for answers and reaction plan
thanks

Glad to hear your wife is better. I have been trying to train myself to use the 4-7-8 breathing. This is where you inhale thru the nose for 4 counts, hold for a count of 7 and blow out thru the mouth for 8 counts. you are supposed to do this at least 4 times a day. not sure if it is helping but seem to be breathing easier most of the time. prayers & hugs to all.

thanks for your response. As a matter of fact she could have been (and HAS been) dehydrated and just tested for a UTI!! I didn't know these were common symptoms. She is at stage 4 and yes the 4+ lpm is at rest. We've been using the pursed lips exercise for the last couple of days and she seems more "with it" now. Thanks so much for your input

Unfortunately, what happened to your wife is the result of high CO2 levels. You need to ask about bi-pap or trilogy machines for home use to help her blow off the CO2 that she's retaining. Talk with her docs about what other things they recommend.

Hi @A MyCOPDTeam Member. By now you've probably already been seen. If you are a CO2 retainer, they should already know. Yes, the bi-pap works to expel the CO2.
I hope your appointment went well and your needs have been met.
