Hi SuzAnn, please take Jean’s advice to heart. While some people do end up on a daily maintainence dose, it is almost always somewhere between 5 to 10 mg/day , with 15mg/day being tops. Please see a qualified Pulmonologist ASAP. She will almost certainly start stepping down your daily dose to that level. I lost my oldest daughter at age 42 to autoimmune disease this past June ( Father’s Day ). While she was always precariously, gravely ill, there is no doubt continued high prednisone dosage accelerated her passing at such an early age. Doctors could never get her successfully weaned down to a sustained lower mainainance dose of prednisone. And we were seeing top medical professionals, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Univ. of Miami , and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Her final 3 years were a constant merry go round between home- to hospital- to rehab. centers. That said, please know that my Pulmonologist ensures I have emergency prednisone medication at home to start when an exacerbation is beginning. I complete that course of medication, stepping down from 60mg/day to 10mg/day to zero over a 2 week period. Prednisone is a miracle medication for many of us, but can too often become a debilitating medication with continual use. I know these are strong statements. They are meant to be. Please see a qualified Pulmonologist ASAP. All Best Wishes to You, judg69

Some people don't have much trouble with side effects; others have many problems. You may be one of the lucky ones. To answer your question, many people are on a daily dose of pred. For some folks that's the only thing that will calm the inflammation down enough to allow them to breathe and have a life. I would talk with your doc about his plans for helping you wean your way off once things are stabilized and other possibilities to help. Ask about either dsliresp or azithromycin three times a week: both are designed to reduce inflammation and therefore exacerbations. You probably don't want to stay on that much pred for the rest of your life, because the side effects will certainly get you with really long term use. If you don't have a pulmonologist, find one. You need an expert in COPD diagnosis and especially treatment.

I was started on 50 mg per day in October with a prescribed taper. Now I am on 10mg per day. So far I haven’t had any ill effects. I will find out the first part of January if this regimen will be yet another new part of my “new normal”.
I look back on years past when all I took was an occasional Tylenol with a whole new attitude.

Ive just finished a course of Prednizone 50mg for 5 days then a half for 5 days. Physically helped but really did a number otherwise. Anxiety attachs, severe confusion, balance issues. I live alone so it's a real concern for me. Havefriwnds check on you if you can. Hugggs
