Have been seeing an ENT for about a month. Said I had a sinus infection and gave me some nasal steroid spray.and did a CT scan. Still not much change. Went to my primary last Friday and he gave me antibiotics and steroids. I already see an improvement. He said that my lungs are clear and sound good.. I still have the colored mucus (yellow, dark yellow, beige and dark beige). Is this normal for those of us with COPD? I am always scared to see the different colors..............
My understanding is that yellow or green mucous is indicative of an infection. My arrangement with my pulmonologist is that I have levaquin for sinus issues and azithromycin for bronchitis issues and I'm to start them as soon as I see the first sign of an infection. I think you need to see a pulmonologist rather than an ENT if you have COPD...or maybe as well as an ENT. It doesn't sound as though the ENT is very aware of the issues endemic with COPD and infections. You probably also aren't getting the best advice regarding COPD maintenance meds and other possible treatments for various aspects of COPD if you're not seeing a pulmo.
Normally, your mucous should not be any color except clear. It's not unusual to have either a sinus or bronchial infection; you just want to get rid of either as quickly as possible and you definitely don't want it to lead to lower respiratory problems.
Kim, have you been tested for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency? If not, find yourself a good pulmonologist and get tested. It's a genetic form of emphysema and the treatment is a bit different than the garden variety COPD treatment we all have.
Carrie 25414,
When my mucus gets dark gray or bull yellow and kinda thick I have infection.
When my mucous reaches the color of spackling mud I call the Dr.
Sounds like a bit of infection working. Antibiotics should help.. Hale easy......
