Sometimes I feel so lousy that my bed is where I want to be. I get a low-grade fever sometimes chills my cough gets worse and I have zero energy. I hear about COPD action plans but have neither my GP nor the Respirologist which I finally got into see in November/22. I also have a Thoracic surgeon that I see annually since she removed my upper left lobe. Last February the surgeon connected me with Alberta Health and helped me get oxygen therapy which I am on 24/7.
Yup. I was forced to retire due to COPD, which is a shame because I loved to work, frankly working was the only thing I really enjoyed. Wow that sounds pretty sad!!
I just heard today about an action plan as I was trying to get some help for my husband instead of waiting at the hospital.Bit of a heavy chest, fluctuating numbers on oximeter we knew he was getting an infection and needed antibiotics and prednisone.
One of the young girls at the clinic, which was full, approached me and said we will get him in.So the action plan will just go to the the pharmacy and we bypass the clinic.2 years in with the copd and we just find out today.I will be calling the specialist to make this happen! We are also in Alberta.
Thank you DugGus, I will make the call on Monday. Do you have emphysema?
Well, I made the call and I am on the waiting list for rehab - I'm in Canada (Calgary Alberta) our health care is free but we have a shortage of Doc n' nurses plus we are still dealing with the backlog due to covid, might be awhile.
I hope your specialist approves your plan, which certainly worked for you. Unfortunately, most of us have to take the action plan idea to our docs rather than the docs talking with us about it. The more people know about action plans and how they can work when we're in the first stages of an exacerbation or flare can really make a difference. Docs who use them generally feel pretty comfortable about them. So spread the word as you've just done! There are sample action plans available on these websites: American Lung Association.org and COPDFoundation.org.
Jean, thank you. I did power through and feel back to my new normal now.
