Has anybody ever had lung volume reduction surgery and if so, was it successful, as far as not needing oxygen and breathing much better?

2001 is a pretty old study, indeed.
That entire procedure may be mute with recent advances in transplants. In other news, The entire organ registry system will be undergoing a revamp soon too. There is still hope.

Here's the link to the NETT trial summary. You'll learn a lot about LVRS and the people that it worked for. One of the things you'll note was that there were lots of people who didn't do well, and they defined who can do well with the surgery. We've learned a lot since then, too, and the screening is much more disciplined than it was.
