Barrie, I hope your doc did a walking test with you. If you let your sats stay in the low 80s you're really risking both heart and brain damage and you really don't want either. 02 is one of the few treatments for COPD that actually prolongs life.

Exerting yourself takes more energy than sitting down, and part of that energy depends on your 02 saturation levels staying above 88-90. If your 02 sats drop when you're doing things it's because you aren't getting enough 02 from room air to keep all the parts of your body functioning normally. When your sats drop like that, your brain sends the available 02 to places like the brain and the heart and other body parts don't get enough to keep functioning at top efficiency. It's a sign that you would probably benefit from supplemental 02. If you already have supplemental 02, talk with your doc about raising the flow of 02 to keep your sats at an acceptable level; if you don't have it, get tested and then when it's prescribed, use it!
