Should I Start The Antibiotics If Steroid Isn’t Working?
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi my dad has been coughing up blood and super low in energy.. I started him on a steroid but since it being Memorial Day no contact with doctor today wondering if it would be good to start The antibiotics. I talked to nurse on Friday said to see how he does with steroid but doesn’t seem to be helping….

Hi Cassidy. IT is unfortunate your Dad is getting poor information and limited treatment in your area. But you should be applauded for stepping up to the plate for him.

These two meds are normally taken TOGETHER to offset any flare-ups of our condition. But the missing element is to stay Hydrated. Wet, like a fish. WATER is probably most effective, but all things wet and juicy count: teas, juices, fruits, soups. Even coffee. Water helps break up any mucus which is what addeds congestion and coughing. It also helps with reduce fatigue and any fevers. Don't be afraid to add a Tylenol to the mix if a fever or small pains already exist.

I'm surprised the hospital seemed so rude but perhaps they just don't explain well. They way insurance works, they would not admit Dad without major signs of a respiratory exacerbation. That would include signs of low oxygen concentration (you do have a finger-thingy right?), excessive coughing and shortness of breath (signs of deep lung infection) or fevers and chills (possible body shock or sepsis). Hopefully an upcoming TeleVisit or Urgent Care center will prolong or increase the steroid / antibiotics and clarify his Care plan for big improvements over the next week or so. Take care.

Yes, but you can run into those people anywhere. We must have enough self-respect to show the rude people this is how we expect to be treated. Look them in the eye, answer their questions, and ask some of your own. Your dad deserves to be treated for his condition.

That's dreadful 😘.....I'm in Britain and they say coughing up blood go straight to E.R. I do hope he improves and you get some help soon x😘

Cassidy, I answered your question above…practically wrote a book. You don’t have to put up with the care (or lack thereof) in a City this big. But you know that. A lot of people swear by Emory. I swear AT them.

I forgot to tell you that Piedmont urgent care and Piedmont doctors are all over the place.

Good God honey this is unacceptable ! I didn’t get where you are ! Yes a new pulmonologist but until then I would call 911 if his O2 levels are low and or bringing up blood 🩸 whoever’s said that it could be infection getting worse but my experience that’s an emergency and he needs blood draws and to be made comfortable ! I hope now that holiday has passed people are more cooperative. But sometimes a nasal spray of manuka honey and saline in the nose helps me if I’m having issues . Bless your heart for being there for him .when we are sick it’s so hard to communicate let alone fight with hospital stupidity ! And that’s illegal for them to say that .
