@A MyCOPDTeam Member you described how I feel. Exhausted. I feel for you. I cope by also counting my blessings and by maintaining my sense of wonder and gratefulness towards the nature around me. Greetings from South Australia. Each breath is an achievement ❤️

For me the answer is this, I've always loved to work even before COPD. Now equally so, now for an hour, two max I look forward to my nap. In todays world they talk about Power Naps. With COPD you wake up, take care of what you planned to do this day to stay ahead. plus before or after, you have to take your meds, nebulizer treatments etc, etc and so on. In Texas Summers heat, you need to be back under your AC no later than 10 -11am, have a good Breakfast and that Nap is The Best Sleep Ever. If you think that's Wrong, I don't ever want to be right! I live in a two bedroom single family home on a third of an acre, just God, me and my dog and I could not be happier. Sure it's tough, that's what keeps you going. Now if you just sit in a recliner or stay in bed, you're doomed.
I'm here to Shout Out The Good News, Live with COPD is What You Make It, Trust God and Never Give Up! I've been on Rollercoaster Ride for 30+ yrs and I started off 2023 off of Oxygen 24/7 for the 4th time in these 30 + yrs.
A Positive No Quit Attitude, God, and Exercise ( even one step a day, then two and so on until you can walk a block a day or more ) you too can feel Good about yourself and know You can have a Happy Life.
Remember: Slow Down and Breathe Eazy :-)
God Bless Us All
Amen

Generally, @A MyCOPDTeam Member, they advise those of us with diabetes challenges to eat so that their blood sugar remains stable. “Stable” is defined as anything which returns us to 130 or under 130 (and above 70) blood glucose within two (2) hours after eating.

In my case, carbs are my nemesis. Carbs in breads and chips and cookies turn into sugar, and the conversion process for turning carbs into sugar is the conversion process which makes me so sleepy. Sandwiches are my favorite choice for a meal, but if I want to stay functional and bypass a nap, I need to focus on proteins as my primary source for food. Meats, eggs and cheeses are all things I can thankfully tolerate with my crazy diet issues, and I get lots of protein from legumes like kidney and pea beans (since I can’t really tolerate fruits, veggies or nuts).

There’s a very helpful variety of books, “Eat this not that”, as well as a dietary comparison book which weighs choices of a chocolate cupcake or slice of cake (better) vs. a vanilla or white cupcake or slice of cake (worse) that’s higher in refined sugars.

There’s a great list of foods you can eat to fight fatigue, and I had to laugh as the top ten choices only include beans and dark chocolate that I will actually eat.

If you haven’t consulted a nutritionist, it might be worth a discussion, too, for seeing if there is anything you can do differently to help you eat anything until you’re willing to call it a day for a nap, too.

Good luck, as I know you can make a huge difference in your quality of life as you pursue the thyroid connection and whether there are similar resources to help you avoid sleepiness and fatigue each day until you have time to deal with the need for a nap.

Happy Sunday, 25-JUN-23

I just thought of something else. When we eat we use up energy. Pretty ironic because we need to eat for energy. And because we have lung disease, it takes a lot out of us simply breathing. Our hearts also have to work hard.
I try to get as much done in the morning, after a light breakfast, then my main meal around lunchtime, and a healthy snack in the afternoon. The irresistible nap seems to occur after the main meal. I just go with it, and it's only for around a half hour. And I feel refreshed for later.
I hope this helps. After going to a lung/sleep doctor, where I learned about "sleep hygiene", and while it helped, for sure, it still didn't solve it. Good Luck 🤞

I have found that the worse I get the more fatigued I am. Actually I have gone from fatigue to sheer exhaustion. I fall asleep sitting up and go into a deep sleep too. I could literally sleep around the clock. It's from my COPD and some ot the other 12 chronic illnesses I have. I am on O2 24/7 and use the BiPap at night. But it its what it is. I try to be positive every day and count my blessings. I am very fortunate to live on Vancouver Island where the scenery is gorgeous and the Ocean is beautiful.
Hope everyone out there has a wonderful day 🙂
