My lung doctor put me on two 400 mg tablets of guaifenesin (Mucinex) to thin and loosen the mucus in my lungs and throat. You may want to try a lower dose to start with if the mucus is not too thick.

Many people do a variety of things to get relief from mucus, including drinking lots of water, drinking lots of hot water (not coffee or tea, just hot water, maybe with lemon), using mucinex, nebulizing saline solution and albuterol, huff cough method, percussion and postural drainage.

My Pulmonologist has me nebulize twice a day. It loosens the mucus, as does the guaifenesin with lots of water. I take the time everyday to lay down and clear my lungs, about 20 minutes. Laying down brings the mucus up. I might have to do it a second time later.
