I have critical COPD.
A number of people have had the surgery, some with very good results and others, not so much. I know of a few situations where the valves have been removed. In general, though I think most of the valve placements have been reasonably successful. A lot depends on how well the sugery protocols are followed; when they're followed correctly, things seem to go better than when corners appear to be cut.
