to reduce mucus,
first: don't smoke,
second: drink a lot of water to keep your lungs and bronchis well hydrated, and easier to thin the mucus,
if the mucus is colorated, go to your doctor;

Hot water in teas, especially herb teas with honey
Gargle with salt water.

First off, drinking lots of water helps to thin it. I use Mucinex DM to help thin and lessen it. Recently I have found Mullein tea to really lesson it a lot.
