What types of exercise do people with COPD do, and for how long?

MyCOPDTeam members engage in various forms of exercise to manage their COPD. The goal is to gradually work up to exercising for 20 to 30 minutes, at least three to four times per week.

Here are the types of exercise that are beneficial:

- Stretching: Take 5 to 10 minutes before and after exercise to stretch your muscles
- Strengthening exercises: Focus on upper body exercises to strengthen respiratory muscles
- Cardiovascular or aerobic activities: Walking, jogging, or biking strengthen your heart and lungs while improving oxygen use

One MyCOPDTeam member shared they use a pedometer and aim for four miles a day. Others attend pulmonary rehab classes three times a week, while some use senior exercise videos, tai chi, or dancing videos at home when they don't feel like leaving the house.

The key is starting where you're comfortable and gradually building up your endurance. Remember to use the breathing techniques you've learned to manage breathlessness during exercise. Many members find that consistent exercise actually improves their breathing, mood, and reduces COPD-related fatigue over time.
