I just replaced my old temper-pedic memory foam mattress last year with a new one. I've never encountered a problem with that. I've been trying to sleep more upright in my easy chair,it seems to help with the cpap headgear. Hope it helps. C YA

Oops, I was wrong. It hasn't been 20 years using that mattress. We were wearing Covid masks while shopping for that mattress, so it could have been only 5 or so years. Sorry about that.

That's terrible. Don't know why they would sell a mattress that is potentially dangerous. We've been using one of those mattresses for 20 years!

Is memory foam safe to use with COPD, or does it release gases that affect breathing?

Memory foam products can release chemical fumes when new, a process called "off-gassing." These fumes can potentially irritate your lungs and trigger COPD symptoms like chest tightness and shortness of breath.

If you're considering memory foam products, here are some tips to reduce exposure:

- Air out new memory foam items in a well-ventilated area for several days before use
- Choose products labeled as low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) or CertiPUR-US certified
- Keep your bedroom well-ventilated with fans or open windows
- Consider using an air purifier with a HEPA filter in your bedroom

Strong scents and chemical fumes are known COPD triggers that should be avoided when possible. If you notice breathing difficulties after introducing memory foam products, it's best to remove them and discuss alternatives with your doctor.

Many people with COPD find that elevating their head while sleeping helps with breathing, regardless of mattress type. You might explore other options like adjustable beds or stacked pillows if memory foam concerns you.
