Some people with COPD find that dairy products like milk can thicken mucus, making it harder to cough up. If that sounds familiar, it may be worth cutting back.
On the other hand, if milk doesn't seem to worsen your symptoms or increase phlegm, there's no reason to avoid it. It can actually be a good source of protein and hydration.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Watch for increased mucus or phlegm after drinking milk β if it gets thicker, try reducing your intake
- Full-fat milk can be helpful if you need to maintain or gain weight
- Low-fat or skim milk is a better option if weight loss is your goal
- Milk counts toward your daily fluid intake, which is important for keeping mucus thin and easier to clear
Staying well-hydrated is especially important with COPD, so if milk works for you, it can be a tasty way to help hit that goal!

I do. It doesn't seem to make my phlegm any worse. It helps me keep weight on. I have not been eating as much ice cream lately but I do enjoy my ice-cream too.
