AI, is spot on this time. So it basically your personal choice that decides. I personally use the 1200DM so I don't take as often. Although rarely use it anymore, only when I am severely bad. I control the excess mucus naturally most of the time.

Great question — thick, stubborn mucus during a flare-up is one of the most frustrating parts of COPD. Guaifenesin (Mucinex) works by thinning and loosening mucus to make it easier to cough out.

Great question — thick, stubborn mucus during a flare-up is one of the most frustrating parts of COPD. Guaifenesin (Mucinex) works by thinning and loosening mucus to make it easier to cough out.

The 600mg is the standard dose, while the 1200mg is the extended-release version that works over 12 hours. Both contain the same active ingredient — the difference is mainly timing and convenience.

A few things worth knowing:

- 600mg works faster but needs to be taken more frequently
- 1200mg extended-release provides longer, steadier relief throughout the day
- Staying well hydrated is just as important — water helps Mucinex do its job
- During a flare-up, mucus changes are a key sign to watch closely

That said, thick mucus during a flare-up can sometimes signal an infection, which may need antibiotics. It's really worth checking in with your doctor before changing your dose, especially during a flare-up. They can also review whether a rescue pack with antibiotics or steroids might be appropriate for you right now.
