My opinion is that until SHE is ready, willing and able to quit, there is nothing you can do or say that is gong to help her stop. Just keep encouraging her when she can go without a cigarette for a period of time. Good luck. Chris 9/3/26

It sounds like there's real concern here — are you asking how long your wife can continue smoking with COPD without quitting?
There's no simple answer to that, as it depends on the stage of her COPD, her overall health, and other factors. What is clear is that continuing to smoke significantly speeds up the progression of COPD and makes symptoms harder to manage over time. Here's what quitting can do for her:
- Slow disease progression — it's one of the most impactful steps she can take
- Reduce flare-ups — fewer and less severe episodes of breathlessness
- Improve breathing over time — many people notice a difference relatively quickly after quitting
- Help medications work better — her treatment plan becomes more effective
Quitting is genuinely hard, and it often takes multiple attempts. As one MyCOPDTeam member shared, "Don't quit quitting" — it took them eight tries before it finally stuck.
Encouraging her to speak with her doctor is a great first step. There are medications, nicotine replacement therapies, and support programs that can really help. She doesn't have to do it alone.
