Surgery With Anesthetic
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone with severe COPD had surgery requiring anesthetic? If so, what was used, duration & effects? Facing surgery & deemed very high risk.

I've been under general 4 times in the last few years without a hint of trouble. As long as the doctors know your medical issues, you should have no problem.

No problems @A MyCOPDTeam Member . The new anesthetic is now a spinal block. Everything below the block location is numbed for surgery. The patient wakes up with NO adverse conditions and they heal better and faster also. This is going to be the anesthetic of the future until the next best one comes along. Hope your surgery is successful !

@A MyCOPDTeam Member Thank you so much for your very informative reply. Makes me feel much more confident prior to the surgery I will need. Still have 1 more test to complete before any decisions are made by the Dr. Again, I sincerely thank you for your kind reply. Barbara

I have had 2 hip replacements and several other operating room procedures, I have spinal anesthesia and then an IV drip of a sedative to sleep while the surgery is being performed. Have not had any problems at all. Speak with your doctors about having spinal anesthesia. I have severe COPD.

Many people with very severe COPD have surgery and recover quite well. The trick is to find a surgeon and anesthesiologist who understand COPD, the problems and difficulties, who can talk with you and your family and determine the appropriate kind of anesthesia for you and the procedure you need to have done. Any time you hve a surgery, there's risk, but usually there's a way to work with you that doesn't involve higher than reasonable risks. You do have to find the right docs.
