My O2 Levels Drop Like Rock When I Walk To

I usually am on the go and am the person that helps any and everyone. Take them places and do the lifting and carrying of stuff. I don't ask for help and have always maintained on my own. But I quit smoking and my breathing became a real struggle. I just fought it for a long time saying that I would come out of it but instead it just got worse so I went to my doctor and my level was at 56 and he said I needed to go to the hospital and when I informed him that was not going to happen, we… read more

I get like this if I am not getting enough exercise. I know it may sound difficult especially if you are having trouble with 02 dropping just from walking to another room in your home but you start out slowly and build up gradually. The more in shape your muscles are the less oxygen they will require. Just like an athlete must exercise to stay in shape for their sport, I have to stay in shape to get the most out of my life in my current situation with copd. I am in a pulmonary physical rehab program at our local hospital. They monitor my oxygen, pulse and blood pressure to make sure I am at safe levels during the work out. You might want to ask your doctor for orders to join one if you have something available to you in your area.

If you're using O2 and your sats drop like that, CO2 retention isn't likely to be the problem. If it were, you'd be really SOB, but your sats would be good. Are you being treated by a pulmonologist? If not, you need to be. And if you're being treated by a pulmonologist, you need to talk with him about what your sats are doing. If he doesn't tell you to crank your O2 up before you get up to do something, find another one! Ask him what his long term treatment plan for you is. The biggest question to ask is what can I do to help myself? That should get you some good discussion about exercise, diet, weight control, exercise, meds, exercise......you get the idea. Ask about Pulmonary Rehab; that's a good way to get started with exercise and learning something about COPD. The more you know the better.

My levels also go into the 50's, but I do not remain conscious.I wake up in a hospital(15 times in 15 months, 5 days per time)After 5 different teams of drs.but Oxygen Salesmen recommended a dr.that has kept my out of the hospital going on 3 months now. They got me a trilogy machine & meds.I no longer use neubulizer with breathing treatments, rescue inhalers, spirava & 3 other meds.I've had 2 attacks start, put the trelogy on & the attacks passed. It blows the carbon dioxide out & oxygen in with 10 times the power the cpac, & bipap did.I was crushed in an auto accident & my air sacs won't stay open. There are stem cell therapy trials being done & I am trying to learn about them.3 people I know of have returned to better than transplant quality life. Don't give up! I was 100% bed confined & I am carefully even driving. You can get better if you want to.But the right drs.was my key.And it took 5 complete teams to get to the right one.I am new & would enjoy conversing with you.Kathy in Louisiana
