Can someone explain if they are the same thing
Yes COPD is the umbrella term for lung diseases such as emphysema, bronchitis and asthma.
They say they are. The damage to the lung is there permanently if it is emphysema. I have it and you don't exchange gases properly in the lung . But obstruction is obstruction, the meds may be different for other kinds or combo problems
I have asthma as well so I am simply on Albuteol and oxygen.
COPD is the umbrella term that includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis and bronchiectasis as well as asthma, depending on who you talk to. Part of the reason for that is that very few of us have just one and not any of the others; most of us have elements of chronic bronchitis and emphysema; some of us also have bronchiectasis. I know, for instance, that when I was first diagnosed, I had lots of chronic bronchitis and bronchiectasis events. I was finally hospitalized for respiratory failure and during that time got lots of antibiotics that helped get rid of the infections. That plus my immediate starting of a very aggressive diet and exercise program began the process of getting into really good shape physically for the first time in my life. Now, I rarely have any chronic bronchitis and no bronchiectasis, but definitely have issues with emphysema. When I do get something respiratory, it immediately goes to bronchitis and I have to be very careful that it doesn't morph into pneumonia.
Emphysema is part of COPD, but it can be a "stand alone" diagnosis. Most of us have some of both.
You are right, just you keep your 64%, keep fit ad you have got it made.xxx
@A MyCOPDTeam Member COPD is an umbrella name for lung diseases which emphysema is. They kind of lump them all together
