Can Anyone Tell Me How Long A Covid Survivor With Copd Will Be On Oxygen?
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was discharged from the hospital on March 3 after spending ten days being treated for COVID-19, hypoxia, and bilateral pneumonia. I also have COPD and asthma. The hospital doctor sent me home with continuous use oxygen. I’m wondering if anyone else has been in the same/similar situation and may be able to tell me about how long I can expect to be on 24/7 oxygen.

The answer to your question is unfortunately, "we don't know". There are kind of two questions, really. The first is in regard to COPD exacerbations. If you'd just had a COPD exacerbation that was bad enough to put you in the hospital for 10 days, my guess is that you would have been sent home on O2. Remember, they don't keep you in the hospital to recover, they get you stable and then they send you home to recover. How long you'd be on O2 and whether you'd ever be able to function well without it would depend on two things: how much additional damage to the lungs was caused by your exacerbation and how hard and how long you're willing to work to recover (usually exercise, and hard exercise at that). When I've been really sick, I have been able to recover, but it usually took 3 to 6 months to get back to where I could do what I'd been doing prior to getting sick, exercising and pushing myself hard every day. The first thing you can't do anything about; it is what it is; the second depends on you.

COVID adds an additional element of damage to the lungs and whether you can recover from that or make your heart and lungs more efficient than they were prior to your illness through hard, daily exercise. I'd talk with your pulmonologist about what you can do, how much exercise you can do, if there are limitations about heart rate, O2 sats, etc. I'd also suggest that you start very slowly. I found that if I tried to do what I had been doing prior to getting sick I just discouraged myself horribly because there was no way I could sustain that effort for a full workout. I was much better off to pretty much go back to the very beginning, start really slowly and that way I could see progress. The psychological difference for me was HUGE!
There's no guarantee that you'll get off O2, but I can guarantee that if you work at it, you will feel a whole lot better and be able to do a lot more with less O2, even if you still need it. Exercise makes the heart and the lungs much more efficient and the more efficient they are, the less O2 they will need.

The ingredients of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine (pdf) are listed as follows: messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA), lipids ((4-hydroxybutyl)azanediyl)bis(hexane-6,1-diyl)bis(2-hexyldecanoate), 2 [(polyethylene glycol)-2000]-N,N-ditetradecylacetamide, 1,2-Distearoyl-sn-glycero-3- phosphocholine, and cholesterol), potassium chloride, monobasic potassium phosphate, sodium chloride, dibasic sodium phosphate dihydrate, and sucrose.
The ingredients of the Moderna vaccine (pdf) are as follows: mRNA, lipids (SM-102, polyethylene glycol [PEG] 2000 dimyristoyl glycerol [DMG], cholesterol, and 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine [DSPC]), tromethamine, tromethamine hydrochloride, acetic acid, sodium acetate, and sucrose.
The "vaccine" is not a true vaccine. I have COPD, and I will not take the shot(s).
COVID 19 has been mutating, and therefore their "vaccine" is not viable, which means you'd have to get more at a later date? Man-made, pushed through? No, no.
I take: D3 1,000 to 3,000 IU; C 3,000; Quercetin 250 mg; Zinc 30 - 50 mg; Melatoninin .03 mg; and am considering Ivermectin .02 mg. I also take Mullein leaf extract each day, and drink plenty of fluids. For one's poundage, take 1/2 in ozs. of water - 150 lbs, take 75 ozs. of water per day.

Well said, Jean. It takes time to recover from any setback, and each person is different, with different needs and expectations. Secret is to start slow, and build up your body with healthy food and nutrients, and exercises that work for you.

I do hope you’ve recovered. I’ve been isolated a year now for fear of getting sick. COPD and Covid are a deadly combination. One by itself is bad enough. That said, Do you check your oxygen levels and have you asked the doctor? I’m so praying for herd immunity so that we can get back to semi normal lives. I’d also like to know how COPD effects people with COPD, as I fear the vaccine as well,
