after HIV hit and was taking a lot of lives people started speaking out and marching and demanding that the government speed up the process of finding good medicine and treatments . Although HIV still exist they have came along long way in treating HIV and preventing it .I think this progress is great , hope they continue to work on this issue . i think all people with COPD and lung disease should take the same approach toward our government as the people did with HIV… read more
If you really want to do something, go to www.copdfoundation.org and join the Patient Powered Research Network and volunteer as a state captain or advocate. Learn about the research that is going on. Donate money for research. Go to your local ALA and volunteer to help them with their awareness activities. Get involved with the US COPD Coalition. Write to your senators and representative and let them know what you want. Learn as much as you can about COPD so you can speak to people knowledgeably. We need people who will continue the activities that were started by people back in the late 90s and early 2000s. We've never had enough people to really help. Lots of people seem to be concerned, but not very many people want to actually do anything.
A cure is possible and I fully expect that we'll have one. I don't think I'll be around to see it, but maybe some of you younger people will. It's going to take a lot of science to get us there, so encourage your kids and grandkids to learn science and technology in school. We don't have enough of them either!
You're right, of course, but you have to remember that AIDS was transmissible and there were a lot of people who were at risk of getting it, but young and strong and able to march on the capital. In addition, there was money to fund some of the activities of making people aware and working to erase the stigma that AIDS was a disease only gays and drug addicts got. I've been involved with COPD awareness in a number of difference ways for more than 20 years, and you're right, we need a march on Washington......it'll be the slowest march ever, but it needs to be done! If people didn't smoke, that would reduce the incidence of COPD by about 75%. Give you any ideas?
Meds are only going to reduce symptoms; they're not going to restore lost functionality. Stem cells have potential, but the lungs are complex and we need stem cells to do vastly different things in different areas of the lung, so we don't know how to do that yet. We need good science at the cellular level all the way to clinical trial level, and that's slow. COPD is the result of structural changes, so it's a completely different problem than AIDS was. COPD is the third leading cause of death in the US and around the world, but the CDC doesn't have any money that's dedicated to COPD.......does that tell you something?
i do think that we people need to organize and press the government to do more NOW . nobody made us smoke , it was our choice however 90% of us would not be sick if it was not for the cigarettes' company's not really trying to compare it with HIV {because HIV is also a terrible disease and i feel for people that have contracted it and my prayers go out to them } but a lot of HIV cases could have been avoided also with use educating people and safe sex or restraining for drug use or sex . most copd cases are from our doings but we are humans and we need someone to alot us funding {goverment or cigrette companys and private funding }. we need a cure soo i really do believe that this disease could be cured .

I do know that with mindfulness of one’s body and learning what my triggers are and staying as far away from them, being able to maintain a good healthy lifestyle is key. I thank God every day for yet another day of doing well. I have been on the same breathing meds for close to 20 years. That’s an interesting question. God Bless you and Breathe Easier
@A MyCOPDTeam Member I SO totslly agree with you!!!! In this era of progressive medicine and research we should be more advanced in treatement of copd and even a possible cure!!! Would it not be possible for this group even to get some sort of petition going that might start the ball rolling??? If anyone was interested i would be happy to do the word processing required for such a presentation to whatever dept or authority that would be concerned An apple starts as a tiny seed so why not let this group take the first step? Big venture i know but everything starts small!!! Prob only a pipe dream but hey who knows? maureen2
