It depends, like so many things with COPD, it depends. Some people have an easy time and get great results and others don't and get just so-so results. We're learning a lot about both the valves and the surgery, but we still don't know everything there is to know to guarantee a good outcome every time. So it depends. The surgery still involves some cutting even if it is laparoscopic, so there's pain and healing involved. The valves still can result in pneumothorax and extra days in the hospital. Sometimes the valves don't stay were they're placed. Neither are slam dunks and both can go really well or really badly. No guarantees for either. If it goes well, it can be life-changing. If it doesn't and the outcome isn't great it can be very disappointing. You just have to make the best choice you can and hope for the best.
