A Combivent Respimat and an albuterol nebulized treatment is adequate treatment for COPD, but I would say is not common unless your COPD is very mild or moderate. The Combivent is a short-acting muscarinic agent; most of us are prescribed long-acting ones, such as Serevent or Performist, neither of which has the albuterol component of Combivent. Combivent is sometimes used in lieu of Spiriva or some other LAMA. I took it because I reacted badly to Spiriva and its cousins.

There's nothing wrong with the combination if it works for you. If you'd like to dispense with using the Combivent four times a day, you can ask your doc about long acting muscarinics such as Spiriva, Tudorza and Incruse. Those are only taken twice a day. There is a Spiriva Respimat, so you wouldn't have to learn different inhaler technique.

Justjoyce, Dr. told me not to take them together, something about getting overdose of albuterol, since Combivent has albuterol ingredient.

Ritaann, hi 👋, I use both also. I'm suppose 2 use Nebulizer 3x's a day. But I don't. Only as needed. Same with my Comivent. Also, Dr. added Spirivia. I struggle the most when I take my shower 🚿. So I wear my Oxygen in there as well. I'm on the Oxygen 24/7. I 💬 think whatever works 4 us ⁉️ we'll have a nice day n breathe 👃 ezzy 🫁❗

Hey there, Ritaann--- Your Dr is correct. Both of the drugs have albuterol in them; your RESCUE inhaler (don't leave home without it!) and the Combivent Respimat Inhaler does too.

Do you know for a fact that Albuterol IS an ingredient in the little vial you pour into your mouth piece area for Nebulizing?
I'll need to look at mine.

Please know that you would NOT be using your Rescue inhaler right before, during or right after a breathing treatment. I don't know how many treatments you have been prescribed per day but I would think 1 to 2 times (once in morning and one later afternoon so you have best use and time spread of both meds.

Your RESCUE INHALER (used as needed) will be in your pocket or where you can grab it easily and without needing to get into a tizzy or panic looking for it...
That's NEVER GOOD
(ASK ME HOW I KNOW...)
I guess I'm saying LEARN and become sorta comfortable (savvy) re your meds. Read labels and look up the drug if it's new if you have already thrown the insert in pharmacy bag away---😂
These 3 drugs should work in good harmony. They need to be spaced O U T from one another. If you use the Nebulizer 2x per day and the Combivent Respimat inhaler as prescribed and you give them say, I dunno-- 90 min apart--- and you are consistent with these times each day--- you might find you won't need the RESCUE inhaler as much or as often... and by the way--- make sure you rinse and spit real good after any and all of them BEFORE YOU eat or have that 2nd cuppa☕️☕️! Might as well brush teeth then too, right?

@A MyCOPDTeam Member Albuterol is used in Ventolin and Combivent as a Rescue inhaler. Too much albuterol is a risk also. Symbicort and other Maintenance Inhalers work for longer and most all have a Steroid in them and No Albuterol. Ipratropium is good by itself in a Nebulizer as it has No albuterol or Steroids in them. Too much Albuterol raises the Heart Rate. Go easy on the Albuterol, Ask for a long lasting Maintenance Medication. Also get a Spacer to use for your inhalers. You breath in the Med's Slower than the Blast from the inhaler.
