Hi Krystine. This is really a Doc's question but IT made me THINK and venture to take a stab at sharing from past experience.

Our bodies are weakened a bit during EVERY Flare-up., for sure. Some electrolytes are thrown out of whack which cause acidic conditions in the blood. THIS is what helps the infection get a foothold. SO a blood test is one of the first things they do in the ER - IF you end up there. πŸ€•

You didn't say what "Vitamins" concern you, but C, D3, Potassium and Magnesium are all good ones to have on a regular basis anyway. Staying HYDRATED is also KEY to keeping the blood balanced and Mucus low just the same.

IF a search on the internet about ACIDOSIS does not calm your fears, your Doc will be happy to make sure that Flare-up is not for the worse.

be Well. 🌞

Can you continue taking iron supplements and vitamins during a COPD exacerbation?

Generally, continuing your regular vitamins and supplements during a COPD exacerbation should be fine, but it's important to check with your healthcare provider first. They know your complete medical situation and can give you personalized guidance.

People with COPD sometimes have trouble getting adequate nutrition from food, which can lead to deficiencies in vitamins and minerals like folate, vitamin B12, or iron. These deficiencies can actually make you feel more fatigued, which is already a common issue during exacerbations.

That said, during an exacerbation, your doctor may prescribe additional medications like antibiotics or corticosteroids. It's crucial to make sure your supplements won't interact with these new treatments or make them less effective.

Before taking any supplements, it's best to have your doctor check for deficiencies through blood tests. This ensures you're taking what you actually need and not overdoing it with supplements you don't require.

The bottom line: Keep your healthcare provider informed about all medications and supplements you're taking so they can help you manage your treatment safely during exacerbations.
