I do daily chest clearing to remove mucus from my lungs. If I Don't, I will have trouble breathing just moving around my house.

Does extra chest phlegm help protect from chest infections?

Unfortunately, no. Extra phlegm doesn't protect you from chest infections. In fact, excess mucus in your airways can actually make you more vulnerable to respiratory infections like pneumonia.

When you have COPD, your airways produce more mucus than normal, but this excess phlegm can trap bacteria and make it harder to clear infections. This is why people with COPD are at greater risk for developing chest infections and pneumonia.

Some members have found that thicker phlegm, especially when triggered by certain foods like dairy products, can make breathing more difficult. If you notice dairy makes your phlegm thicker, limiting consumption might help.

The best protection against chest infections includes:
* Taking prescribed medications like bronchodilators and corticosteroids
* Getting pneumonia vaccines
* Practicing good hygiene
* Avoiding irritants and pollutants
* Exercising regularly to help clear mucus

If you develop a chest infection, having rescue medications (antibiotics and steroids) on hand can help you start treatment quickly.
