How can you manage worsening breathing when returning to Idaho from California?

It sounds like the change in environment between California and Idaho is affecting your breathing. Differences in altitude, air quality, humidity, and temperature can all impact COPD symptoms.

Here are some strategies that may help:

Breathing Techniques:
- Practice pursed lip breathing: Breathe in slowly through your nose for 2 seconds, then purse your lips and exhale for 4-6 seconds. This helps release trapped air and improves oxygen exchange
- Try diaphragm (belly) breathing exercises to strengthen your breathing muscles
- Use these techniques regularly, especially when you notice breathlessness increasing

Practical Steps:
- Give yourself time to adjust when you return - your body may need a few days to adapt to the environmental change
- Stay hydrated, as drier air can irritate airways
- Keep your rescue medications readily available
- Consider using a humidifier if Idaho's air is drier
- Avoid outdoor activities during times of poor air quality

When to Seek Help:
If your breathing becomes overwhelming despite these techniques, contact your doctor or go to the ER. It's better to be safe.

Well you could move in with your son. [You said "any."] It has to be the colder weather. It will take a bit to readjust so take it slow and easy. You may want to make sure the humidity in the house in Idaho is between 30-50%. I am in Missouri and use a cool air humidifier to help keep the humidity at 55%, how I like it. It makes for a safe place for me to breathe.
