Members shared their struggles with traditional cleaning products like Clorox triggering COPD symptoms and burning their lungs, prompting a shift to safer alternatives. Several members offered practical DIY cleaning recipes using white vinegar, rubbing alcohol, lemon juice, and tea tree oil for glass, all-purpose cleaning, and bathroom disinfecting, while others recommended natural product lines like Melaleuca. A recurring theme was the challenge of maintaining high cleaning standards while protecting respiratory health, with members expressing relief at finding gentler options that work effectively without worsening their breathing.

I just use vinegar and soap for cleaning now. I can't take the Clorox cleaning products anymore. Inhaling those fumes makes my lungs feel like they get burnt.

Me too @A MyCOPDTeam Member Glass cleaner: 2 cups water, 2 Tbs white vinegar & 2 Tbs rubbing alcohol. All purpose cleaner: 2 cups water, 1/2 cup white vinegar, & juice of 1 lemon. (don't use on granite or marble) Bathroom Disinfectant: 1/2 cup white vinegar, 1/2 rubbing alcohol and 20 drops tea tree oil. These do a pretty good job!

Does using cleaning chemicals cause COPD to worsen, and is there a cleaning product that doesn't affect your breathing?

Yes, chemically based cleaning supplies can definitely worsen COPD symptoms and potentially trigger an exacerbation, whether you're doing the cleaning yourself or just exposed to the fumes. Products with bleach or ammonia are particularly problematic.

If you're exposed to strong scents or fumes, you may experience chest tightness and shortness of breath almost immediately.

Here are safer alternatives to consider:

* "Green" cleaning supplies
* Simple soap and water
* Baking soda
* Vinegar
* Hypoallergenic products free of perfumes and fragrances

If you must use chemical cleaners, wear a respirator mask rated "N95" by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, or better yet, have someone else do the cleaning for you.

Also switch to unscented personal care products like shampoo, soap, deodorant, and hairspray to reduce overall exposure to irritating fumes in your home.

Making these changes should help you notice an immediate difference in how you feel and make it easier to control your symptoms.
