Ive been experiencing a very bad flare for close to two months ,i think im slowly getting better but still couphing up lots and shortness of breath especially bad at night in bed, so not sleeping much either. I looked up postural drainage and my wife has started doing it with me for a couple of days. Too soon to say but we felt we had to try something different. I think I feel a bit better afterwards and couph up a bit. Interested in other peoples experiences with postural drainage.

Has anyone tried postural drainage to help clear excess mucus with COPD, and how effective was it?

It's great that you and your wife are being proactive! Postural drainage β€” where you position your body so gravity helps mucus drain from your lungs β€” is a recognized technique for helping clear mucus in COPD. It's often combined with chest percussion (gentle clapping on the back), which is what your wife may already be doing.

A couple of things worth knowing:

- It works best when done consistently over time, so "too soon to say" is exactly right
- Doing it before bed may help reduce nighttime coughing and improve sleep
- Staying well hydrated helps thin mucus, making drainage easier
- Some people find a nebulizer or flutter device beforehand helps loosen mucus further A MyCOPDTeam member shared this tip: *"Humming as deep a note as you can causes the voice box to vibrate and loosen mucus in the throat."* Simple but worth trying alongside postural drainage!

Since your flare has lasted close to two months, it's really important to loop in your doctor if you haven't already. They can assess whether medications need adjusting and ensure you're on the right track. Two months is a long time to be struggling β€” you deserve proper support! πŸ’™
