First of all, a new diagnosis can feel overwhelming, so it's completely understandable to have questions about what's normal and what's not. The good news is that coughing with some phlegm (mucus) is actually a very common symptom of COPD and emphysema โ€” so you're not alone in experiencing this.

First of all, a new diagnosis can feel overwhelming, so it's completely understandable to have questions about what's normal and what's not. The good news is that coughing with some phlegm (mucus) is actually a very common symptom of COPD and emphysema โ€” so you're not alone in experiencing this.

Here's what's happening: with emphysema and COPD, the airways can become inflamed and produce excess mucus. The body then tries to clear it out through coughing. It's essentially your lungs doing their job. That said, it's always worth keeping an eye on your symptoms. Here are some signs that would mean it's time to contact your doctor sooner rather than later:

- Your cough is getting significantly worse
- The color of your mucus changes (yellow, green, or brown can signal infection)
- You're feeling more short of breath than usual
- You're waking up at night struggling to breathe

And these are signs to seek emergency care immediately:

- Gasping or choking
- Lips or fingernails turning blue or gray
- Feeling confused or unusually mentally foggy
- Unable to speak due to breathlessness

Since you're newly diagnosed, this is also a great opportunity to talk with your doctor about what to expect and how to manage your symptoms going forward. They can help you stay ahead of things. ๐Ÿ’™

No Carol, not with a small amount. It is common to have some phlegm. You were heard, it is just something that is normal for us that have been dealing with it for a while. I have bronchitis also and that produces more phlegm.

I see you're new and probably worried if not scared. What you want to watch for is; a sudden worsening of symptoms or phlegm. You also want to watch the color of the phlegm, white or clear is normal. If it turns yellow or green you need to see your pulmonologist right away. Keep reading and posting. Breathe Ez.....
