Chrissya, azithromycin has been clinically trialed for use either every day or every other day for treatment of inflammation. Yes, it's an antibiotic, but it also has anti-inflammatory properties. The clinical trials were done back in 2007-10 and there's a wealth of research that demonstrates that the treatment is effective. There's another medicine that does much the same thing called Daliresp. I'm working on a study that will compare the two to see who responds better to which med so we can be better informed as patients and as docs and make better choices with patients.

I take azithromycin daily and have for aprox. 3 years, 250 mg. Yes, it's an antibiotic but also used in treating COPD. I read about daily antibiotic treatment in a book on COPD, asked my doctor about this treatment and it's worked wonders in my case. I've had no ill effects and feel it's responsible for keeping me out of trouble (for now). If it quits doing the job, I'll look for other treatment but so far so good. See the post from "Jean" who covers this subject very well. I would say, if you are having repeated problems, give this a try and you may see wonderful results.

Yes, Azithromycin IS effective. I had repeated pneumonia, lung infections, etc. and have been taking 250 mil
daily. Since this treatment began, I've had only one bout of pneumonia which is a major change for me. I've been taking this drug for aprox. 2-1/2 years. Hope this helps.....

I've been on Daliresp for about two years now, and it does work quite well.. Sadly, my lung doctor's nurse won't renew my scropt, until I see him Thursday. I've been off it for about two months now and am seriously feeling the effects.. Gladly, I have a maintenance dose of 5mg of Prednisone and Spiriva Respimat, Symbicort, Combivent and Montelukast, to hold me over till I see him.. Yeah I know, the Symbicort, Spiriva and Combivent are controller meds, but as long as they can hold the fort, till I can get the Daliresp, I aint complaining.... I have only had to visit the ER twice this year, and haven't had to be admitted since 2014.. I'm very mindful of triggers and cold and change of weather flare-ups... For those I keep on hand, Methylprednisone (Medrol dose pack) and Levofloxacin or Azith, as so I don't have to go to the ER.. ONLY use those when there is an infection and colored phlegm, being coughed up.. That Daliresp IS some good stuff...

Pjskadoo, have you tried it either daily or every other day and it doesn't work? You could also take daliresp, which does basically the same thing: reduces the inflammation in the lungs. Remember, Azithromycin taken daily or every other day is taken for the anti-inflammatory properties, not just the antibiotic effect. By reducing the inflammatory response in the lungs, you don't get sick as often, and not as badly if you do become sick. So if the azithromycin didn't work, try Daliresp.
